Sunlight
I kept my ornate windows closed
And my long curtains shut tight
Expelling every sliver of light
For the shadows are comfortable
Comfortable, soft and quiet
A cozy haven behind locked doors
Hard to reach, hard to leave
And yet I complained about absence
Absence of what I had as a child
I had forgotten that we used to play
In the sunlight beneath the trees
On the balcony, dangling our feet
Near jasmine flowers, and marigold bushes
Scattering dolls under turquoise skies
